MORNING SESSIONS

9:15 – 10:15am: Will the Dragon Lead the Way?

Experts on the Middle Kingdom’s politics, economy and human rights in 2012 kick off this year’s AAJA-JMSC conference. Beijing prepares for a rare leadership succession next year – who are China’s next chosen leaders and what change could they bring? What’s the latest on the surprise escape of blind human rights activist Chen Guangcheng and on disgraced Chongqing mayor Bo Xilai following allegations that his wife was involved in the death of a British national? Also, China has throttled back on its growth forecast after a decade of red-hot expansion. What does this mean for you and for Made in China products?

AAJA-Asia member Phil Pan, former Washington Post Beijing bureau chief, is our political expert; Chief Asia Economist Stephen Schwartz from BBVA is our finance guru; and Joshua Rosenzweig, a China human rights expert and former Senior Manager at The Dui Hua Foundation, fill out this roundtable.  (Speaker profiles)

10:30 – 11:30am: Peeling Back the Apple’s Skin

We get the freshest juice on Apple, the world’s most valuable company, with Marketplace’s China correspondent. Rob Schmitz forced a rare retraction on a recent episode of the popular radio show This American Life. He visits us from Shanghai and sits down for a one-on-one 30-minute lightning round to share his story and the latest news about this tech giant. (Speaker profile)

11:45am – 12:45pm: The Nexus of News & Public Relations

Ever felt used or abused? Hear from public relations experts and journalists on how we can best cultivate beneficial relationships – and not get spammed or hounded every day. You don’t want to miss this panel with Thomas Crampton, Asia-Pacific Social Media Director at Ogilvy & Mather and former University of Hong Kong professor;
Tamora Leonard, Vice-President at APCO Worldwide
and former Reuters journalist; and Susan Field, CEO and Founder, Impact Asia in Hong Kong. (Speaker profiles)

LUNCH
1 – 1:45pm

AFTERNOON SESSIONS

1:45 – 2:15pm: MOJO Rising – Have Phone, Will Report!

Is your phone the only reporting gear you need? Stephen Quinn, Digital Development Editor at the South China Morning Post, gives us a hands-on “How-To” for reporting with our mobile phones. Quinn will show examples from around the world of how reporters are using them to create HD broadcast-quality television, slideshows and other multi-media forms of journalism – and how you can apply them to your work and social networking. (Speaker profile)

2:15 – 2:45pm: Instagram Interactive – Picture Perfection!

If you’re on Instagram in Hong Kong, then you should know Tyson Wheatley. He’s the city’s co-founder of Instayay, a club for Instagram obsessives. Since starting the group with two friends in 2011, Wheatley now has more than 60,000 followers as he snaps his way through his Hong Kong life. He tells us how to best use this popular app with a hands-on interactive editing demonstration. By the way, if his name seems familiar elsewhere, that’s because Wheatley is also senior editor at CNN.com International. (Speaker profile)

2:45 – 3:15pm: Science Behind the Social: Engineering the Tipping Point

Did you know Asia’s first social media laboratory was founded right here in Hong Kong? James She, HKUST professor and director of the university’s NIE Social Media Lab, shows us the “science behind the social” at the NIE Social Media Laboratory located at Hong Kong University of Science & Technology
(HKUST). He will speak about the feasibility of finding the tipping point of digital media and potentially engineering it to happen, as well as its implication to journalism. The lab focuses on the research and design of next-generation social media systems, networks and applications in emerging cyber-physical societies. In the year 2100, will Facebook be “so last century”? We’ll learn what’s cutting edge here. (Speaker profile)

3:30 – 4:30pm: Social Media & Branding in 2012

We know that if we don’t pop up in our own Google searches of ourselves then we’re living under a rock. But it’s not just Facebook and Twitter anymore. We hear from news anchors, editors and bloggers about best practices for building and keeping up your online social presence. This final power panel of the day includes Kristie Lu Stout, CNN International anchor; Dan Gillmor, founding director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication; and Jay Oatway, a Hong Kong-based social media consultant ranked #22 on Forbes Top 50 Social Media Power Influencers in 2012. (Speaker profiles)
