Free, Online Sessions to Improve your Digital Reporting Skills

The AAJA-Asia Training Network is pleased to announce a new series of free training sessions for journalists looking to improve their reporting skills and employ the latest digital tools in their news gathering, fact-checking, reporting and storytelling.

While we are getting ready to deliver our first in person training workshops in two years with partners in India and Indonesia (see our training schedule), we are pleased to invite you to join the following online sessions:

Digital Tools for Journalists (Part 1)

Saturday 5 March, 2022 – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm (HKT/SGT)

This online session will present an overview of the latest, free online tools and workflows that journalists can use for finding, visualizing and telling news stories. The workshop will focus on how to search for and monitor news stories trends online and on how to use geo-localization and visualization tools to improve storytelling. It will cover the following tools/topics:

  • Google Drive and tools
  • Advanced Search
  • Google Trends
  • Alerts + Archiving
  • Monitoring the Environment

Digital Tools for Journalists (Part 2)

Saturday 12 March, 2022 – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm (HKT/SGT)

This  second session will be the continuation of the workshop’s part 1. It will be an opportunity to answer questions participants may have about the notions covered in the first session and to present new reporting tools and best practices.

Trainer

Holly Chik is a reporter covering China for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. She is also the co Vice President of AAJA’s Asia for Hong Kong. She previously served on the AAJA-Asia board as the student representative in 2019. She is a certified trainer of the AAJA-Asia Training Network .

Fact-checking & Source Verification (Part 1)

Saturday 12 March, 2022 – 1:00 to 2:30 pm (HKT/SGT)

This session will present a fast-paced overview of the most up-to-date issues and practices in online verification. It will also look at the free Google tools, and the best alternatives, used by fact-checkers worldwide to check stories and debunk hoaxes. It will cover the following topics:

  • Common newsroom mistakes
  • Reverse image/video searches
  • Deepfakes
  • Social media monitoring
  • Sourcing and Attribution

Fact-checking & Source Verification (Part 2)

Saturday 19 March, 2022 – 1:00 to 2:30 pm (HKT/SGT)

This  second session will be the continuation of the workshop’s part 1. It will be an opportunity to answer questions participants may have about the notions covered in the first session and to present new fact-checking tools and best practices.

Trainer

Rebecca Isjwara (@beckyisj) is a reporter with S&P Global Market Intelligence, covering banking and financial services in APAC. She currently serves as the secretary of AAJA–Asia, where she champions journalism through workshops, events, and annual conferences.
